Heartworms, Dirofilaria immitis was once considered a parasite of southern climates, however is now considered a a serious, worldwide pest affecting dogs, cats, wolves, coyotes, foxes, and some other animals. From its discovery in dogs more than a century ago and the documentation in cats in the 1920s, researchers have devised diagnostic tests, preventives and treatments, but the disease has spread to all 50 states. According to the Heartworm Society, the highest infection rates occur in dogs (not maintained on heartworm preventive) within 150 miles of the Atlantic and Gulf coasts and along the Mississippi River and its major tributaries. Other areas with large mosquitoe populations also have a high rate of infestation.

Heartworms belong to the same class of worms as roundworms. In fact, they look a bit like roundworms, but that is where the similarity ends.

Dogs and cats can only be infected by the bite of an infected mosquito. There’s no other way dogs get heartworms. And there’s no way to tell if a mosquito is infected. That’s why prevention is so important.

Both male and female live within the chambers of’ the heart, usually extending through the valves. The worms prohibit proper valve closure as blood is pumped from one chamber to the next, seriously impairing the operation of the heart. In heavy infestations the woworms in infected dog heartrms migrate up the pulmonary artery and clog the blood vessels of the lungs. Upon reaching the heart, the young adults continue to grow. Up to now there has been no evidence of disease in the dog. It is only after adult worms mate and start to discharge tiny motile microfilariae that circulate in the blood that disease becomes apparent. Microfilariae appear in the blood about 200 days after infection.

Typically the symptoms of heartworm infestation include:

· Coughing

· Inability to exercise without wheezing, coughing or retching

· Abnormal lung sounds

· Loss of consciousness

The treatment of heartworm starts with the administration of parasite-killing drugs. This is a two-step process. The adult worms and the microfilaria are eliminated separately. No one medication kills both. The adults are treated first then a different treatment is used to kill the microfilaria and migrating larvae.

Before making the decision to treat a heartworm infection, the stage of the disease must be evaluated. Heartworm disease is broken into three classes:

* Class one - asymptomatic to mild heartworm disease symptoms
* Class two - moderate heartworm disease symptoms
* Class three - severe heartworm disease symptoms

The most serious side effects commonly occur with the treatment of the adult worms. As the worms die they lodge in the lung arteries and block even more blood vessels than before treatment. Besides the usual inflammation caused by the presence of the worms, the inflammation is amplified due to the decomposing worms within the blood vessels. This worm destruction releases foreign substances in to the dog’s circulation as the worms break down and are eliminated from the dog by the immune systems. A large amount of inflammation and swelling generally occurs during this period.

Wobbler’s syndrome is a malformation of the spinal cord that occurs primarily in Doberman and Great Dane breeds of dogs. The syndrome is so-called because the dogs develop a wobble in their walk. The dog may appear clumsy, unable to negotiate corners, and have difficulty moving as if inflicted with arthritis. They may stretch their necks out or be reluctant to bend them. If left untreated, Wobbler’s syndrome may result in the dog being unable to move at all.

In Great Danes the symptoms of Wobbler’s syndrome may appear at any early age, possibly as young as three months. In Dobermans the syndrome may only manifest itself after the age of five. If you are considering acquiring a Great Dane or Doberman, ask if Wobbler’s syndrome is present in the dog’s family line.

The wobbling symptoms can be treated and, in some cases, reversed in several ways. First, in mild cases steroids and bed or cage rest may help. In more severe cases, surgery for the dog with Wobbler’s will need to be performed. However it is possible that, in the most serious cases, no treatment may be possible.

It is unknown what causes Wobbler’s syndrome, although the fact that it affects certain types of dogs suggests a genetic cause. Some have suggested that diets high in calcium and / or protein may be at fault. If you own a Doberman or Great Dane, you should speak to your veterinarian about a developing a proper diet.

Does my dog have osteoarthritis? It’s good to ask that question any time you have an older dog. Osteoarthritis is a common affliction among older dogs. There is no cure but that doesn’t mean that there isn’t help.

Osteoarthritis doesn’t develop suddenly. It is a chronic disease that affects the joints. It causes pain and decreased mobility. Dogs of any breed or size can develop the condition.

If your dog has developed osteoarthritis the first thing that you will notice is problems with mobility. The dog will not want to move because it hurts. It may limp and not want to walk or move because of the pain.

Lethargy, swollen joints and joint stiffness are also signs of osteoarthritis. The dog may not want to be touched or begin to hide from you. Barking unexpectedly and yelping with movement or when being petted, may be a sign that your dog has developed osteoporosis. Alternately, the dog may move slowly when awakening in the morning or after getting up from a nap.

It’s important to note that not all dogs will show all of these symptoms. Some dogs will show more of one particular symptom than others. The overall rule of thumb is that the more the disease has progressed the more symptoms that the dog will show.

The BARF diet was developed by an Australian vet and is based on the feeding of raw bones, meats, vegetables and necessary supplements for your dogs health and well being. He believes that dogs should be fed according to their biological ancestors and not the artificial grains most commercial dog food manufacturers package. Many say that feeding the BARF diet will improve energy and help dogs with allergies, and other health problems and will promote shiny coat and healthy skin. It has also been noted that feeding raw bones is far safer than cooked bones as cooked bone is more likely to splinter and become a choking hazard.

However, the debate rages on, as others believe that by feeding raw meats the pet owner is putting these animals at risk of bacterial contamination such as E. coli and Salmonella. Both E. coli and Salmonella organisms can also infect other animals and humans. Some believe that raw meat increases the levels of testosterone in some dogs, thus resulting in a more aggressive nature. And, still others say that the raw bone can cause punctures in the lining of the stomach and intestines.

The main drawback to the BARF diet is that unless you follow properly formulated recipes, you could create nutrient deficiencies or excesses that could cause illness in your pet.

Dog owners need to weigh the advantages and disadvantages of both.

The Doberman breed of dog is renowned for its commanding presence, unwavering loyalty, and faithful companionship. It also possesses a stoic beauty and high intelligence. As a choice for a family dog, its even temperament, heightened senses, and protection ability make it a good choice for those who seek both a loving added family member and an efficient protector.

The breed’s name was derived from Louis Dobermann, of Thuringia, whose experiments were thought to have led to the creation of the breed. After Dobermann’s death, the breed was known as the Dobermann-Pinscher. The word pinscher, which means terrier in German, was eventually released from the official name, and over time, the second ‘n’ in Dobermann’s surname was dropped as well.

There are no surviving records documenting which breeds were used to create the Doberman. What is known that two English breeds, the black English Greyhound and the Black and Tan Manchester Terrier, were crossed and the subsequent offspring were used in the creation of the Doberman. Two German breeds are believed to have contributed to the Doberman as well. Those breeds are the Old German Shepherd, which is now extinct, and the German Pinscher, which is also an ancestor of today’s Weimaraner and Rottweiler.

Many breeds of dog evolved over long periods of time, sometimes naturally and sometimes with human assistance. The Doberman is the direct result of human focus and need, leading to the development of a breed. The Doberman was officially recognized as a breed in 1899.

The first albino Doberman was born in 1976 and since, there has been a lot of debate over these animals. With these debates a lot of wrong information and myths have been put out there about them.

The albino Doberman is believed to not really be albino at all. Their fur is a pale tan or a cream color and only the normally “rust colored” parts are white. Their eyes are also not red or pink but blue. Due to the color of their fur and their eyes, many have said they are not actually albino.

Another strange but popular myth is that albino animals are unable to reproduce. However, the opposite is true. Albino Dobermans, and any other albino animals for that matter, are very much able to reproduce just as good as “normal” animals can.

The Doberman Pinscher Club of America (DPCA) warns that Dobermans with blue eyes, pink skin, nose and pads, are “ALBINO’S” and should not be breed, and the trait not be proliferated or propagated. Albino is a “Deleterious Genetic Mutation” and carries with it many traits that are harmful and not conducive to proper Doberman temperament and health.

It is important to note, that there is no dog breed in which albinism is considered to be desirable. As a result of this, some breeders often euthanize albino/white pups. A more common approach is of course spading and neutering.

Albinism can also affect the health of the animals. There may be defects of organs such as the kidneys and it may also affect clotting ability along with affecting the immune system and liver, among a host of other potential health issues.

Albino Dobermans do not have as long of a lifespan as normal Dobermans. The White Doberman Club (WDC) has started a Longevity Program comparable to that run by the Doberman Pinscher Club of America (DPCA). Though, the WDC has chosen to honor Longevity Certificates to any dog who reaches seven years of age, the DPCA awards its certificates to dogs reaching tens years or older.

What Is Von Willebrand Disease?

Von Willebrand Disease (wVD) is a disease that affects the ability to stop bleeding. Dogs inherit this disease and it makes it difficult for blood to clot once the flow starts after an injury. Although this disease can be life threatening it is a rare occurrence.

There is a protein that is in a dogs blood called von Willebrand factor and when the disease is inherited this protein is either at low levels or is not working properly to do the job it is meant to do, which is to help the blood clot. When an injury occurs that results in blood flow the platelates in the blood will form together to fill the hole the blood is coming from. Von Willebrand factor is what helps these platelates to stick together and clot the blood.

This disease is the most common blood disorder that is inherited, more so then hemophilia. About 1 out of every 100 to 1,000 dogs inherit this disease and it can affect both males and females. Doberman Pinschers, Welsh corgis, German shepherds, and Scottish terriers are breeds most at risk of developing wVD.

There are 3 types of von Willebrand Disease. About 3 out of 4 dogs who have this disease have type 1, which is the mildest form of the disease. With type 1 there are low levels of the von Willebrand factor and the factor 8 proteins in the blood. Factor 8 is another agent in the blood that helps to clot.

Type 2 of the von Willebrand disease, is when the von Willebrand factor is not working properly. This type is broken up into categories to determine what needs to be done to help and this makes finding out the exact type of the disease very important so the treatment is correct.

Type 3 is when there are not any of the von Willebrand factor in the dogs blood and a low level of factor 8. This type is the most dangerous to have but it is rare that this type is found.

Diagnosis And Treatment

Veterinarians have a new blood test that measures very small and very large amounts of von Willebrand Disease with greater accuracy (and in less time) than the old test. Accurately measuring the disease helps predict if a dog will be affected by vWD or will merely be a carrier - unaffected by the disease but with the potential to pass along the defect to its offspring.

Getting an early diagnosis of this disease is important as it can help those who have it live a normal life.

This condition cannot be cured but it can be managed. Your veterinarian will discuss this with you when the diagnosis is made.

Applying pressure can usually stop mild cases of bleeding. For more severe cases, cautery or sutures may be required.

Thyroid supplements may help to control bleeding, if your veterinarian determines that your dog is hypothyroid.

The debate is on for humans’ best loved companions, their dogs and the food they consume. Do these owners really know what they are feeding their best friends? And if they do, would they want to eat what they’re feeding their pets? The difference is between whether they’re feeding them commercial or premium dog food.

Commercial dog food is all that in itself. It’s commercial. The companies are focused on business and appealing to the owners instead of any nutritional health supplements for the animals. By simply adding colors and cutting the morsels into shapes, it looks better to the owner. No matter if the morsel is cut into the shape of a bone or square, your dog will eat it.

But it is cheaper to make a dog food with a high percentage of corn or wheat gluten than more protein. Almost every commercial dog food has two forms of corn within the first three ingredients. Corn is extremely hard for canines to digest leaving it as a supplement that passes through the body without any nutritional aspect other than filling their hungry need.

And what about the small amount of protein that’s in commercial dog food? This so called protein is found in animals by products and other parts of the animals found to be too rancid for human consumption. Rendering plants all over the US render chicken heads, hooves, intestines, etc. Very little of what commercial companies call protein is actually a supplement with very little protein packed into it.

Premium dog food on the other hand offers a much more complete meal for your pet. It offers an array of actual cuts of meat and vegetables in which are consumable and digestible for your pet. Artificial flavorings and colors are not added to the morsels, but needed vitamins of a varying array are. Thus, your dog will not need to eat as much to achieve the nutritional benefits of the commercial dog food.

While price often times can be a determining factor, make sure you ask yourself if you would want to eat what’s in the bag and how much poop you want to clean up. Commercial dog food causes for more to clean up whereas the pet needs to eat significantly more to gain little in nutritional value.
